This award was instituted on July 13, 1934, by President Generalfeldmarshall von Hindenburg. The Cross recognized those veterans who served, and fell, during the Great War; It was the only commemorative military award issued during the Third Reich era. 1-1/2-inch x 1-1/2-inch metal Maltese cross with a light colored bronze finish. The dates 1914 and 1918 are embossed in the center of the medal and surrounded by an oak leaf wreath.
